The Editing of Successful Hollywood Movies Follows a Mathematical Formula

Physorg has an interesting article about how Hollywood movies follow a mathematical formula that “lets them match the effects of their shots to the attention spans of their audiences.”

Here is an excerpt:

“Psychologist Professor James Cutting and his team from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, analyzed 150 high-grossing Hollywood films released from 1935 to 2005 and discovered the shot lengths in the more recent movies followed the same mathematical pattern that describes the human attention span.” … “Cutting made his discovery by measuring the length of every shot in 150 comedy, drama and action films, and then converted the measurements into waves for every movie. He found that the more recent the films were, the more likely they were to obey the 1/f fluctuation, and this did not just apply to fast action movies. Cutting said the significant thing is that shots of similar lengths recur in a regular pattern through the film.”

While the study shows that the films that came close to the 1/f pattern tend to be more successful at the box office than those that don’t, the pattern doesn’t correlate with the overall enjoyment of a film. For example, The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith both follow the 1/f pattern rigidly, but Empire tends to get rated much much higher by most audiences.

Objects to Unify Type Classes and GADTs, by Bruno C. d. S. Oliveira and Martin Sulzmann:

We propose an Haskell-like language with the goal of unifying type classes and generalized algebraic datatypes (GADTs) into a single class construct. We treat classes as ﬁrst-class types and we use objects (instead of type class instances and data constructors) to define the values of those classes. We recover the ability to define functions by pattern matching by using sealed classes. The resulting language is simple and intuitive and it can be used to define, with similar convenience, the same programs that we would define in Haskell. Furthermore, unlike Haskell, dictionaries (or
objects) can be explicitly (as well as implicitly) passed to functions and we can program in a simple object-oriented style directly.

A very interesting paper on generalizing and unifying type classes and GADTs. Classes are now first-class values, resulting in a language that resembles a traditional, albeit more elegant, object-oriented language, and which supports a form of first-class "lightweight modules".

The language supports the traditional use of implicit type class dispatch, but also supports explicit dispatch, unlike Haskell. The authors suggest this could eliminate much of the duplication in the Haskell standard library of functions that take a type class or an explicit function, eg. insert/insertBy and sort/sortBy, although some syntactic sugar is needed to make this more concise.

Classes are open to extension by default, although a class can also be explicitly specified as "sealed", in which case extension is forbidden and you can pattern match on the cases. Furthermore, GADTs can now also carry methods, thus introducing dispatch to algebraic types. This fusion does not itself solve the expression problem, though it does ease the burden through the first-class support of both types of extension. You can see the Scala influences here.

I found this paper via the Haskell sub-reddit, which also links to a set of slides. The authors acknowledge Scala as an influence, and as future work, suggest extensions like type families and to support more module-like features, such as nesting and opaque types.

Outcast: Remaking A Decade-Old Classic [PC]

Outcast was one of those games that was so amazing most people never even got to play it. It just...shone too damn brightly. So much so that this 2010 remake of a 1999 game may well get more exposure.

Open Outcast is a fan-made mod for Crysis Wars, which seeks to recreate Appeal's brilliant open world adventure title with visuals a little more appropriate for this third millennium. Not that Outcast's graphics were bad - indeed, for 1999 they were revolutionary - it's just, running on Crysis' engine, it now looks better.

All you need to download the mod is a trial version of Crysis Wars. After that, you can grab a demo of Open Outcast from the mod's official site. If you've never played the original, I'd highly recommend it.

Command and Conquer Classics gives you C&C for free

While it's hard to believe that the "conclusion" of a franchise as storied and long running as Command & Conquer is not the biggest RTS release of the year, it's still kind of a big deal. To celebrate this big deal EA has released Command & Conquer Classics as freeware. This grouping of games includes all the original C&C games from the 90s including Tiberian Dawn, Tiberian Sun (with the Firestorm expansion), and Red Alert. Three great games for the price of none! Though Red Alert and Tiberian Dawn had been released for free before this is the first time for Tiberian Sun and the easiest its been to get all three ever.

Sadly, the games are old and don't really function on today's modern computers that well. You'll need a few things to get them up and running properly. If you're an RTS fan and for some reason missed these three it's probably worth your while to grab this, but otherwise it might be a bit too much downloading and rejiggering of the computer to really be worthwhile. Thanks to Big Download there are easy links below to all the programs and files you'll need to get things up and running.

How a Simple URL Hack Can Expose Your Gmail Address [Privacy]

Google raised a lot of privacy concerns this week over things like allowing people to figure out your private email address in Buzz replies. Security weblog Social Hacking details another method your Gmail address can be exposed using a URL hack.

Update: A Google spokesperson contacted us to let us know that this bug has been fixed:

Blogger harmonyguy helped us discover a bug that made it possible to discover a user's email address based on their numeric profile ID. Our engineers worked hard to address this issue and it is now resolved.

The Social Hacking post points out that users with numeric profile address (e.g., http://www.google.com/profiles/104424237445852766735--the numeric address of the post's author) may think that means their Google account username is still hidden. Turns out with that number, it's actually very easy to divine a user's account id. Here's how it works (from ReadWriteWeb):

First, you simply copy the numbers from a user's Google profile and then append these numbers to http://picasaweb.google.com/[numbers].

For some users who haven't customized their Picasa page, the username (which is also their Gmail address) will come right up. If the user has customized the account and added a nickname, you simply have to replace the URL in the address bar with javascript:alert(_user.name); and a small pop-up window will show you the username.

The solution, from Social Hacking:

To protect yourself from this access, visit the Picasa settings page. Under "Your gallery URL," add a new username and select the new username for your gallery URL. Also, you may want to edit your nickname.

I suppose the point here isn't that Google's done you wrong in every way, but it's worth recognizing that when you go public with Google accounts, they really are public, and they tie together in more ways than you might realize.

Fascinating. ReadWriteWeb has a weblog post that ranks highly in Google’s search results for “Facebook login”. The comments on the post are filled with complaints from confused people who think that this is the new Facebook login page.

It’s funny, yes, but it’s a fascinating glimpse at just how confused many people are about how web sites and browsers work. They don’t use bookmarks, they don’t type “facebook.com” in the location field. They just Google for whatever they’re looking for and assume the first result is correct. All this argument over whether the iPad is too simple — if anything it’s probably still too complex.

Opera throw constantly errors during native tests.

IE8 produced many false results (on anything like div[]) and some errors (mostly child tests in native and dojo 1.1.1) until he started naggin me constantly to stop the script because it runs to slow (both prototypes on nth-child tests). At least he didnt crash on me. Finally after many, many “No”-Clicks i got a result (Never heard “No Means No”, MS?).
Because of that i didnt include IE’s prototype, dojo 1.1.1 and native times in the graph. Also every other IE value should be taken with a grain of salt because of the many false results.

Digital Mass Effect comic free for one day only

The latest Iwata Asks is full of information that all Zelda fans will dig. On the last couple of updates, the group talking with Iwata whipped out some of the original concept art for The Legend of Zelda for the original Nintendo. The images include a world map, design outline, a dungeon and more.

The interview is a real treat as Iwata is so surprised to see these original documents are still around. It's also really surreal seeing these images. They are just like something a kid would make to help them memorize all the key points in a Zelda game.

★ Apple, Adobe, and Flash

In my “Tablet Musings” piece two weeks ago, I speculated that Apple’s imminent tablet probably won’t support Flash, for all the same reasons the iPhone doesn’t. Reaction to this was polarized — typically either “duh, of course it won’t” or “no way, it has to support Flash”. You can see both reactions represented in the thread on my piece at Hacker News. One group is going to be very surprised come Wednesday.

I’ve been writing about this saga for two years. My fascination with the subject is fueled by the fact that it’s so polarizing, and that it encompasses both technical and political issues.

On Flash and Mac OS X Application Crashes

Two weeks ago I wrote:

To my knowledge, Apple controls the entire source code to the iPhone OS. That’s not to say they wrote the whole thing from scratch. Many low-level OS components are open source. But they have the source. If there’s a bug, they can fix it. If something is slow, they can optimize or re-write it. That is not true for Mac OS X, and Flash is a prime example. The single leading source of application crashes on Mac OS X is a component that Apple can’t fix.

Several readers asked me for the source for my accusation contained in that last sentence, that Flash is the “leading source of application crashes on Mac OS X”. (And good for them for asking; I’m not sure what I was thinking including that without sourcing it.)

Here’s the deal. On stage at the WWDC 2009 keynote address last June, Apple senior vice president of software engineering Bertrand Serlet was explaining the new web content plugin mechanism for Safari in Snow Leopard. Rather than run within Safari’s application process, web content plugins now run in their own process, so if they crash, they (usually) don’t crash Safari itself. You get a broken little rectangle in the page where the plugin was executing, but the browser itself stays running.

Apple did this for two reasons. Serlet’s stated reason on stage was “crash resistance”, as mentioned above. As for why such crash resistance was worth implementing, Serlet explained that, based on data from the Crash Reporter application built into Mac OS X — the thing that asks if you’d like to send crash data to Apple after a crash — the most frequent cause of crashes across all of Mac OS X are (or at least were, pre-Snow Leopard) “plugins”.

Serlet didn’t name any specific guilty plugins. Just “plugins”. But during the week at WWDC, I confirmed with several sources at Apple who are familiar with the aggregate Crash Reporter data, and they confirmed that “plugins” was a euphemism for “Flash”.

In other words, in Apple’s giant pile of aggregate crash reports — from all app crashes on all Macs from all users who click the button to send these reports to Apple — Flash accounts for more of them than anything else. That doesn’t mean Flash somehow causes crashes in any various app. Presumably, most of the time it’s Safari or some other browser playing Flash content. And it’s worth noting that this doesn’t necessarily mean Flash is particularly crash-prone or poorly engineered. Think of it as a formula like this:

total crashes = (crashing bugs) × (actual use)

Flash’s number and severity of crashing bugs could well be somewhat low and it would still account for a large number of total crashes because it’s actually used all the time — by any Mac user with Flash content playing in a web page. And, if Flash Player for Mac OS X actually is poorly-engineered overly-buggy code, well, that’s even worse.

But there’s another reason why Apple created this new external process architecture for web content plugins in Snow Leopard: it was the only way they could ship Safari and the WebKit framework as 64-bit binaries. Flash Player is only available as a 32-bit binary. (This is true for other third-party web content plugins, like Silverlight, but Flash is the only one that ships as part of the system.) 64-bit apps cannot run 32-bit plugins. Apple doesn’t have the source code to Flash, so only Adobe can make Flash Player 64-bit compatible. They haven’t yet. So if Apple wanted Safari to be 64-bit in Snow Leopard (and they did), they needed to run 32-bit plugins like Flash in a separate process.

Maybe you don’t believe Apple that web content plugins are the most frequent source of crashes on Mac OS X. Maybe you don’t believe me and my unnamed sources at Apple that it’s Flash in particular that accounts for this. That’s cool, skepticism is good. So then in that case, maybe Bertrand Serlet blamed “plugin crash resistance” for political reasons, just to stick a knife in Adobe’s back, and the only reason Apple went with this external-process architecture was for the 64-bit/32-bit incompatibility.

But that just shines a light on the fact that Flash is still a 32-bit binary despite the fact that Apple wants to go 64-bit system-wide. Flash remains 32-bit and there’s nothing Apple can do about it. Instead of being able to make Flash 64-bit themselves, Apple had to engineer an entirely new plugin architecture.

This is why Apple wants to control the source code to the entire OS. If they want to go 64-bit with iPhone OS, it’s entirely in Apple’s own control to do so. And what happens if Apple goes to a new CPU architecture? For the components Apple controls the source code to, they can recompile for the new architecture. If the entire system doesn’t recompile cleanly for the new architecture, they can work on it until it does. For a component like Flash, where Adobe controls the source code, Apple instead has to wait.

Which situation do you think Apple is happier with? Mac OS X, where they had to create a new web content plugin architecture because Flash crashes frequently and isn’t 64-bit? Or iPhone OS, where they control the source code to every single component, and can do whatever they want, when they want?

Point is, even if you think Flash Player for Mac OS X is the greatest piece of software in the world and that a Flash Player for iPhone OS would run just fine, too — there’s no denying that Apple executives have said and continue to say anti-Flash things publicly. Apple doesn’t say much about Flash, but what they do say doesn’t sound like the sort of things they’d say if they were looking forward to supporting it more rather than less.

The Proprietary Web

It’s probably pretty clear to regular DF readers that I don’t care for Flash, and that I’m hoping Apple never includes it in the iPhone OS. Might as well make my biases clear.

Why? At the core, because Flash is the only de facto web standard based on a proprietary technology. There are numerous proprietary web content plugins — including Apple’s QuickTime — but Flash is the only one that’s so ubiquitous that it’s a de facto standard. Flash is the way video is delivered over the web, and Adobe completely controls Flash. No other aspect of the web works like this. HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are all open standards, with numerous implementations, including several that are open source.

The simplest argument in favor of Flash support on the iPhone (and The Tablet, and everywhere) is that Flash is, by dint of its popularity and ubiquity, part of the web. But the best argument against Flash support is that it is harmful to the web as a whole to have something as important as video be in the hands of a single company, and the only way that’s going to change is if an open alternative becomes a compelling target for web publishers.

It’s a chicken-and-egg problem. Publishers use Flash for web video because Flash is installed on such a high percentage of clients; clients support Flash because so many publishers use Flash for web video. Apple, with the iPhone, is solving the chicken and egg problem. For the first time ever, there is a large and growing audience of demographically desirable users who don’t have Flash installed. If you want to show video to iPhone users, you need to use H.264.

Apple isn’t trying to replace Flash with its own proprietary thing. They’re replacing it with H.264 and HTML5. This is good for everyone but Adobe.

And yes, I know Flash does much more than just play video. But that’s the main thing everyone is talking about when they talk about Flash not working on the iPhone — video. And when you talk about other uses for Flash, you’re talking about serving as a software runtime, and whether you like it or not, Apple has a clearly stated opposition to third-party software runtimes for iPhone OS, and that policy seems to be working out pretty well for them.

Here’s an email I got from a DF reader:

I was in line waiting for a coffee on Christmas day. In front of me was a kid, about nine or ten, who had an iPhone. He clearly had gotten it that morning. He was pushing frantically at a white box on a web page with the broken plug-in symbol. He was squeezing it, swiping it. He was frustrated and on the verge of getting pissed with his new toy. It seemed like he was trying to hit an online game page, probably one he was used to playing on the family PC. Finally I couldn’t take it anymore. I leaned over and said, “It won’t load Flash. It won’t play your Flash games.” His mom, ignoring him up to that point, was triggered by a stranger talking to her kid. “That’s okay honey,” she said, “we’ll get you a game from the App Store.” His response to this? He started working that device even harder. He didn’t want an App Store game; he wanted his Flash game. And that iPhone suddenly took a huge dive in value to him.

Like it or not, Apple needs to come to terms with this. If only for the kids.

I think this anecdote, and this reader’s takeaway from it, accurately captures the feeling behind much of the “Apple has got to bend on this eventually” sentiment that’s out there.

But think about it from Apple’s perspective. How do you think this situation turned out in the long run? Do you think the kid told his mom to return the iPhone for a refund? Or, do you think they went home and started buying games from the App Store? That there was a period of initial frustration due to Flash games not playing doesn’t change the fact that they (a) bought an iPhone and (b) were set to buy games from the App Store.

I’m not arguing that Apple’s apparent executive-level antipathy toward Flash is about anything other than Apple’s own interests. (I do think, though, that Apple’s WebKit team is genuinely idealistic about helping the web as a whole.)

But while Apple may be acting spitefully, they’re not spiting themselves. The iPhone’s lack of Flash has not hurt it one bit. Perhaps that will change in the future, if Flash someday proves popular on other mobile platforms, but don’t hold your breath.

Flash Performance on Mac OS X

In addition to the principled concerns outlined above regarding Flash being proprietary, there are also practical issues. One, Flash’s aforementioned crashiness on Mac OS X. Second, crashiness aside, its performance on Mac OS X is not as good as it is on Windows. And for video playback specifically, Flash’s performance pales compared to H.264 played through QuickTime. This is not subjective. My machine is a two-year-old MacBook Pro. It plays full-screen H.264 video through QuickTime without problem. When I play full-screen Flash video, my fan kicks in within a few seconds, every time.

I’ve been hard on Flash Player for Mac OS X, but this performance situation is not entirely in Adobe’s hands. On Windows, Flash makes use of hardware decoding for H.264, if available. On Mac OS X, it does not. This is one reason why Flash video playback performs better on Windows than Mac OS X, and also why H.264 playback on Mac OS X is better through QuickTime (which does use hardware decoding).

According to Adobe, though, this is because they can’t. Here’s an entry from their Flash Player FAQ:

Q. Why is hardware decoding of H.264 only supported on the Windows platform?

A. In Flash Player 10.1, H.264 hardware acceleration is not supported under Linux and Mac OS. Linux currently lacks a developed standard API that supports H.264 hardware video decoding, and Mac OS X does not expose access to the required APIs. We will continue to evaluate when to support this feature on Mac and Linux platforms in future releases.

Adobe platform evangelist Lee Brimelow recently posted a weblog entry addressing this:

But let’s talk more about the Flash Player on the Mac. If it is not 100% on par with the Windows player people assume that it is all our fault. The facts show that this is simply not the case. Let’s take for example the question of hardware acceleration for H.264 video that we released with Flash Player 10.1. Here you can see some published results for how much the situation has improved on Windows. Unfortunately we could not add this acceleration to the Mac player because Apple does not provide a public API to make this happen. You can easily verify that by asking Apple. I’m happy to say that we still made some improvements for the Mac player when it comes to video playback, but we simply could not implement the hardware acceleration. This is but one example of stumbling blocks we face when it comes to Apple.

I’m aware of no reason to dispute this. Windows is more hospitable to a third-party runtime like Flash than Mac OS X. I think most would agree that Apple is an opinionated company (to say the least), and they make opinionated products. The runtimes Apple cares about are Cocoa and WebKit. The Apple way to play H.264 is through the QuickTime APIs (and really, as of Snow Leopard the new QuickTime X APIs), not to write your own H.264 playback code that seeks to directly access hardware accelerators.

You can argue about why Apple has taken this stance. One could argue that it’s pragmatic — that Apple doesn’t allow third-party software access to things like hardware H.264 acceleration because it seeks to maintain a layer of abstraction between third-party software and the underlying hardware. One could argue that it’s political — that Apple is happy to make Flash look bad performance-wise because Flash is competitive with Apple products in several different regards. (E.g. you may wish that Hulu, which is entirely Flash-based, worked on your iPhone and worked better on your Mac. Apple wishes that Hulu’s content was going through the iTunes Store.)

I would argue that it’s both — that Apple’s distaste for Flash Player is both a matter of engineering taste (that third-party software should only have access to high-level APIs) and politics. But objectively, regardless of what you personally wish Apple would do with regard to Flash, if Adobe needs Apple to grant them further access to the hardware to make the Mac version of Flash Player better, what are the odds that they’d get that sort of low-level hardware access on the iPhone OS? (Hint: zero.)

I’ll leave the last word to Apple COO Tim Cook, who a year ago said, “We believe in the simple, not the complex. We believe that we need to own and control the primary technologies behind the products we make, and participate only in markets where we can make a significant contribution.”

If you do know, then hey -- you might be pleased to know that the soundtrack is now available for download. Each track costs a minimum of one dollar (but you can pay more if you want), while the entire five-song album costs three dollars (but, again, you can pay more if you really want to). Come to think of it, it's not really a "pay what you want" sort of a thing so much as it's just a relatively cheap soundtrack.

Either way, you can get it here. An enhanced version of Canabalt is also still available for the iPhone and iPod touch.

'Final Fantasy' and 'Final Fantasy II' Coming to the iPhone

The Final Fantasy series started with the original release in 1987, spawning a game franchise that has since become Square Enix's most successful series and overall has sold over 85 million units worldwide as well as often serving as the benchmark that nearly all roleplaying games are compared to.

Details are sketchy at best right now, with nothing more than a set of screenshots released on Square's Facebook page. With a release date of "TBA", both games appear to be the same highly refined versions that were released on the PSP.

'Riddim Ribbon' Coming February 8th

Tapulous announced today that their much anticipated musical racer will debut in the App Store on February 8th. They've also released a new teaser video featuring music from the Black Eyed Peas.

We first heard of Riddim Ribbon back in September when the game was previewed at Apple's media event.

The game puts you in the role of the DJ as you race down a ribbon. Your job is to follow the groove as best you can using tilt controls. You can choose to remix your songs by choosing different paths on the ribbon.

Windows/Mac: If you've ever wondered what a photo would sound like converted to music, free application RGB MusicLab aims to help you find out—sans the LSD.

RGB MusicLab is a portable application, available for Windows or Mac, that takes the RGB color values of an image and converts them, based on intensity, into sound. You have a high degree of control over the output of RGB MusicLab. You can adjust the size of the mosaic it creates for pieces of greater or lesser complexity, select from over a hundred instruments and sound effects that the Red, Green, and Blue color values will be represented by, and whether or not the individual color channels will play independently or harmonize, among other options.

The results won't be a carefully orchestrated concerto, but we certainly had fun loading different types of photos into RGB MusicLab and seeing what the outcome was—Christina Hendrick's photo, seen above, created a dynamic Broadway-musical-esque number and a photo of a tropical beach yielded a piece that started off fast and furious and then slowed to soothing melody. RGB MusicLab is freeware and available for Windows and Mac OS X.

The first issue of Dark Horse's Mass Effect: Redemption comic has hit store shelves, giving fans their first look at new locations and characters that will play a big role in Mass Effect 2. Let's see what's new!

Mass Effect: Redemption is a prequel of sorts to Mass Effect 2. In the first issue, Shepard's blue-skinned potential love interest from the first game, Dr. Liara T'Soni, is trying to determine the ultimate fate of the galaxy's only human Spectre.

Dark Horse editor Dave Marshall explains that Redemption is much more than a throwaway comic tie-in. "As you know, Mac Walters, the lead writer on Mass Effect 2, penned the story of Mass Effect: Redemption, and he integrated the comic directly into the events of the game. Because of this, while there have been trailers and screenshots and the like teasing at new characters and locations in Mass Effect 2, the comic is the first time many of them are seen in the actual context of the overall Mass Effect story."

Dave walked me through some of the Mass Effect 2 first appearances occurring in Redemption.

Omega Station

The Citadel of the Terminus system, Omega Station has been revealed to be a major location in Mass Effect 2. The majority of the first issue takes place on Omega Station.

The Drell

While Shepard's new companion Thane is a Drell, our first look at the new species in action comes by way of Mass Effect: Redemption's Feron. Feron aids Liara as she searches for clues to Shepard's ultimate fate.

The Blue Suns

This mysterious mercenary group jumps Liara and Feron as they continue their search. Not much is revealed about the group in the comic, but screens from Mass Effect 2 have shown Shepard shooting it out with them.

Miranda

This member of the Cerberus organization confronts Liara in the comic, offering knowledge of Shepard's whereabouts. She'll be another member of Shepard's team in Mass Effect 2, and knowing BioWare, you'll probably be able to sleep with her.

The Illusive Man

The mysterious leader of the Cerberus organization appears in the first issue, making Liara an offer she can't refuse.

The Collectors

The new villains of Mass Effect 2. The Collectors want Shepard, and they're willing to do anything to get him.

Hell, everyone wants Shepard, but there's not enough of him to go around. Get your first look at Mass Effect 2 by picking up the first issue of Mass Effect Redemption, available wherever fine Dark Horse comics are sold.

Left 4 Dead 2's Frying Pans Kill a Tank 3 Times Faster than Shotguns [Charts]

Granted, this chart assumes the Tank is just standing there taking the abuse. Still, a Steam user found that 10 frying pan hits kill a Tank in nine seconds, compared to 30 blasts from a combat shotgun in 26 seconds.

The forum user, Urik, found that It's not just the frying pan, any melee weapon is a 10-hit kill on a Tank, expert difficulty. You can go all honky-tonk man on him with 10 whacks from the git-tar if you like, which sounds even more absurd (and less durable) than the cookware. I've never done this, probably would never try to do it except as a last resort. I'm betting Tanky-poo, in actuality, makes it take longer than 9 seconds, though.

Star Wars HTML and CSS: A NEW HOPE

There are a lot of CSS transitions experiments going on right now. Yesterday I discovered another HTML and CSS experiment which went "far far away", compared with my simple CSS gallery.

Guillermo Esteves presented a piece of history translated for tomorrows browsers: the Star Wars Episode IV opening crawl in HTML and CSS:

Unfortunately, the live experiment is not suitable for all browsers and the ideal target seems to be only OSX 10.6 and its latest Safari browser but it partially worked via Google Chrome as well.

Something To Learn About

We are moving complex computations into our favorite "decoration layer": CSS
We also want as much control as possible, and the above concept is brilliant to understand how to tame CSS transitions.
This example includes new and different techniques. Here is what I found interesting:

@font-face

OK, this is not new at all, but in this case I could not find a single valid reason to avoid the original font: a must! The only point here is that the author could have saved a bit of bandwidth via pre-deflated or gzipped fonts rather than serving them without any apparent optimization.

Perspective

The stage is the block element where the magic happens. The perspective property is able to give us a "deep space" 3D feeling making closer objects look larger than further ones. Via origin modification we can decide where things should disappear, in this case a bit higher point than a central 400px, to create a similar atmosphere respecting the movie choice (and I guess to make content readable as well).

Iteration-count and Custom transitions

Far far away is the initial text. As we can see with other browsers as well this appears and disappear in 6 seconds.
This fade-in-out happens just once, so at the end of the effect, unless we won't modify the node class, the element won't be displayed anymore. This is what the animation-iteration-count property does while next snippet is the fade-in-out customization:

Via keyframes <transition_name> we can blend FX linearity deciding the amount of opacity, or other properties, at certain moments.
A generic normal linear fade-in-out would be visible 100% only in the middle of the transition while in this case it is forced to be visible for 68% of the time, making fade in and out still homogeneous but controlling the full opacity for longer.
We could have used an ease-in-out effect over opacity property to obtain a similar result but I find definitively more interesting this kind of approach.

Thanks to Z axis transitions the initial STAR WARS image can appear and disappear using again a customized FX:

Above mix of webkit properties suggests me that new JavaScript libraries will use run-time actions to CSS transformations soon, rather than hard and manual JS computations over computed styles or similar expensive operations.
We can control delays, we can stop FXs removing classes or simply overwriting existent directives and, moreover, we can split the CSS itself into logical parts as the same @gesteves did, putting custom animations all together: good hint!

If we have a good broadband connection and we are sure in 12 seconds we have buffered enough audio, the synchronization between JavaScript and the transition delay is almost perfect and the demo experience unique.

It is great to see this work, and I look forward to seeing what he comes up with next. It feels that with HTML5, CSS3, and the Web.Next we will be able to be much more creative. Finally, it's December, I can already imagine a CSS3 based snow effect for our pages ... no?

Pattern Calculus

Barry Jay has recently published a book on the Pattern Calculus (which has been discussed before).

The pattern calculus is a new foundation for computation, in which the expressive power of functions and of data structures are combined within pattern-matching functions. The best existing foundations focus on either functions, as in the lambda-calculus, or on data structures, as in Turing machines, or on compromises involving both, as in object-orientation. By contrast, a small typed pattern calculus is able to support all the main programming styles, including functional, imperative, object-oriented and query-based styles, and there is evidence that it can support a language for Web services, able to exploit data structures about which almost nothing is known.

The book covers the operational semantics of both functional and OO features, as well as static and dynamic pattern-matching. Then it covers type systems necessary to deal with all the wild polymorphism thus gained - in rather readable fashion. Then it covers bondi, a programming language based on ML, Java and (lots of!) pattern-matching.

So far, Capcom has been rather stingy when it comes to showing footage of Okami sequel Okamiden in action. Fortunately, that miserly attitude has been made up for with a nice three-minute trailer that looks absolutely bloody gorgeous. And cute. So very, very cute.

After a full system restore from a Timemachine backup my apache didnt start anymore.

Reason

The restore didnt create (or the backup didnt contain) the directory for apaches log files.
So i fixed it with:

sudo mkdir /private/var/log/apache2
